The Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation has ceased to exist. On 1 January 2009 the Ombudsman was merged with the other Ombudsmen against discrimination into a new body: the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. The previously existing acts against discrimination were also replaced with a new Discrimination Act. Some of the material on this website may therefore be out of date. National Board of Student Aid Refugees Domestic equipment loans
Homosexuals and heterosexuals Different rules applied to homosexual and heterosexual cohabitants as regards approval of loans for the purchase of domestic equipment, depending on the applicants sexual orientation. This was discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation since there was no objective reason for making a distinction. Discrimination was in accordance with current legislation, however, and depended on the wording of the statute in question. Nonetheless, this situation was unacceptable, HomO ruled. Since the Government was in the process of amending this legislation, HomO closed the case and decided that no further steps should be taken. (Decision of 26 November 2002, Dossier No. 301/02) |
