The Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation has ceased to exist. On 1 January 2009 the Ombudsman was merged with the other Ombudsmen against discrimination into a new body: the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. The previously existing acts against discrimination were also replaced with a new Discrimination Act. Some of the material on this website may therefore be out of date. HomO’s attention was drawn to possible discrimination against homosexuals in the application form for financial assistance employed by the City of Stockholm. The Ombudsman subsequently decided, on its own initiative, to examine whether the wording of the form concerned might be considered discriminatory with regard to the applicant’s sexual orientation.

In the course of discussions with HomO, the City of Stockholm agreed to revise the application form for financial assistance in order to avoid wording which might be considered discriminatory with regard to the applicant’s sexual orientation. The City amended the form, in consultation with HomO, to ensure that the wording could no longer be considered to discriminate against homosexual persons. According to the City, use of the new form by the City’s municipal district administrations commenced in early 2002. As a result, HomO considered that the object of the examination had been achieved and the case was closed.
