The Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation has ceased to exist. On 1 January 2009 the Ombudsman was merged with the other Ombudsmen against discrimination into a new body: the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. The previously existing acts against discrimination were also replaced with a new Discrimination Act. Some of the material on this website may therefore be out of date. Updating of TV register National registration Partnership A man lodged a complaint about Radiotjänst I Kiruna AB, the company responsible for the collection of TV licence fees in Sweden. The main points were as follows. He had received a letter from Radiotjänst I Kiruna (Radiotjänst) which included the following text: In the course of updating our records for the ownership of TV sets, we were unable to trace your name. [ ..] If you have a cohabitant who pays [the licence fee], we should explain why you may have previously received repeated enquiries about ownership of a TV set, despite payment of the TV licence fee by your cohabitant. This is because the national registration system only contains information about married couples [ ]. The mans civil partner had been included in Radiotjänsts register of TV owners for several years. The national registration records contained information about both marriages and civil partnerships. As a result, the manner in which Radiotjänst treated persons who had entered into a civil partnership was to be regarded as discrimination on the grounds of homosexual orientation. In its response to HomO, Radiotjänst stated that it normally ensured that the TV licence had not been paid by a spouse or civil partner prior to sending a letter enquiring about ownership of a TV set, but that the checking routine had been defective in this instance. Radiotjänst also said that it was going to amend the wording of the letter in the near future, in order to indicate that information about civil partnerships was obtained from the national registration system. In view of this response, HomO concluded that it could not be considered that there had been any discrimination on the grounds of homosexual orientation.
