The Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation has ceased to exist. On 1 January 2009 the Ombudsman was merged with the other Ombudsmen against discrimination into a new body: the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. The previously existing acts against discrimination were also replaced with a new Discrimination Act. Some of the material on this website may therefore be out of date. Transportation Company Harassment A woman lodged a complaint with the Ombudsman. The main points were as follows. She worked as a ticket collector for a public transport company in Stockholm. One of her colleagues had made highly aggressive and strongly homophobic comments on a number of occasions while they were working together. The woman, herself was not homosexual, but her colleagues behaviour upset her in a very unpleasant way. She reported these occurrences to her supervisors, but they took no action. After the Ombudsman asked the womans union (SEKO) if it intended to represent her in this matter, SEKO informed the Ombudsman that an agreement had been reached with the employer under which the woman no longer needed to work with the colleague in question. In addition, SEKO reported that the employer was not prepared to tolerate such occurrences, and that the employee concerned would be given notice if there was a repetition of this behaviour. The woman declared that she was satisfied with the agreement reached by SEKO and the employer and formally withdrew her complaint to the Ombudsman. As a result, the Ombudsman closed the case and decided that no further steps should be taken. (Decision of 13 May 2002, Dossier No. 101/02) |
