The Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation has ceased to exist. On 1 January 2009 the Ombudsman was merged with the other Ombudsmen against discrimination into a new body: the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. The previously existing acts against discrimination were also replaced with a new Discrimination Act. Some of the material on this website may therefore be out of date. Incitement to hatred – Criminal Law – HomophobiaA man was convicted of incitement to hatred with reference to sexual orientation (Chapter 16 Section 8 of the Swedish Penal Code), among other offences, for carrying in public a t-shirt with the text ‘Faggot hater – Sweden’. He was sentenced to a 2 months suspended prison term, under probation and with an obligation to do community service. (District Court of Vänersborg, judgment 16 December 2004 in Case no. B 4393/04) |
