The Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation has ceased to exist. On 1 January 2009 the Ombudsman was merged with the other Ombudsmen against discrimination into a new body: the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. The previously existing acts against discrimination were also replaced with a new Discrimination Act. Some of the material on this website may therefore be out of date. Education – Employment – Occupation – Health Care – Practical Work
Experience – Harassment A nurse student complained of having suffered sexual orientation related harassment while completing a compulsory practical work experience period in a public hospital. She had brought the harassment to the responsible student relations officer at the hospital but felt that she was not taken seriously. She then submitted a complaint to the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman noted that the law obliges both the hospital and the university to investigate and, if necessary, take appropriate action to secure that the harassment does not continue. The same day the harassments occurred, the nurse had herself arranged for a transfer to another hospital. Thereby she had effectively deprived the hospital of any possibilities to take action to prevent further harassments against her. Therefore there had been no violation of the law. The Ombudsman nevertheless underlined in his decision the importance of having clear policies for dealing effectively with this kind of situation. The file was closed with these comments.
