The Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation has ceased to exist. On 1 January 2009 the Ombudsman was merged with the other Ombudsmen against discrimination into a new body: the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. The previously existing acts against discrimination were also replaced with a new Discrimination Act. Some of the material on this website may therefore be out of date. Direct Discrimination – Scout Association – Lutheran Church of Sweden -
SettlementA woman complained to the Ombudsman that she had been told by representatives of a scout association linked to a parish of the Lutheran Church of Sweden that she could not be employed as a theological assistant for a summer camp, the reason being that her girlfriend was already employed and the employer did not want to have couples working together at the summer camps. The woman claimed that later, however, she found out that there were several examples of heterosexual couples working together. The scout association denied allegations of discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation, saying that there were different policies for different categories of jobs. During deliberations with the parties, the Ombudsman reached an out of court settlement, including a payment of 20 000 SEK (approx. 2 200 Euros or 2 800 US Dollars) by the scout association to the woman. The Ombudsman then closed the file. (Decision 13 March 2007, dossier no 478-06) |
