The Ombudsman against Discrimination on grounds of Sexual Orientation has ceased to exist. On 1 January 2009 the Ombudsman was merged with the other Ombudsmen against discrimination into a new body: the Swedish Equality Ombudsman. The previously existing acts against discrimination were also replaced with a new Discrimination Act. Some of the material on this website may therefore be out of date. Goods and Services – Transport– Harassment

A woman complained that she and her girlfriend had suffered harassment from a taxi driver during a trip in his car driving them home from a civil union ceremony. Allegedly the driver noticed that there were to brides present when he picked up the complainant and her girlfriend and this triggered a conversation during which he repeatedly made derogatory comments about gays and lesbians. The driver denied having submitted the women to harassment but had accepted a disciplinary punishment imposed by the company that owned and administrated the joint switchboard to which the driver, together with many other independent taxi drivers were connected. The driver refused any out of court settlement, but since the complainant declared that she did not have the strength to go through the possibly lengthy court proceedings, the Ombudsman could not file a law suit and therefore closed the file without taking any further action.
