UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
The Public administration has an obligation according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to protect children and youth against discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation (both the child’s and their custodians). It also has to guarantee the gay, bisexual and lesbian youth access to information, support and protection in order for them to be able to live in accordance with their sexual orientation.

According to the interpretation of the UN Committee on the Rights of the child, the convention covers also sexual orientation, and requires that young gays and lesbians are given the necessary information, support and protection in order for them to live according to their sexual orientation; see General Comment no. 3, CRC/GC/2003/3, March 17, 2003; General Comment no. 4, CRC/GC/2003/4, July 1 2003; Annual report from the Committee, session 19, CRC/C/80, October 9, 1998; List of Issues, UK, CRC/C/Q/UK-IM/1, June 26, 2000, CRC/C/15/Add. 188, October 9, 2002; and the periodical report concerning Austria.
